Program Overview

The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream (GES) under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program is a provincial business immigration pathway that allows international graduates of Alberta post-secondary institutions to apply for permanent residence after establishing or operating a business in Alberta.

The program is designed to retain locally educated talent who can contribute to Alberta’s economy through active entrepreneurship, job creation, and business innovation.

Applicants enter through a points-based Expression of Interest (EOI) system, and top-ranked candidates are invited to submit a detailed Business Application.

Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an invitation, nomination, or permanent residence.

A key feature: candidates are not required to establish the business until the Business Application is approved by AAIP.

Process Roadmap

01

Confirm Mandatory Eligibility

Verify Alberta education credential, valid PGWP at EOI submission, CLB 7 language, and intent/capacity to operate a real Alberta business.

02

Submit EOI (Points-Based)

Submit an Expression of Interest scored out of 125 points; AAIP invites top-ranked candidates periodically.

03

Invitation to Apply (Business Application)

If invited, prepare a detailed Business Application. All claimed points are verified at this stage.

04

Business Application Review

AAIP assesses business credibility, economic benefit, and applicant’s operator role; inconsistencies between EOI and evidence commonly lead to refusal.

05

Business Establishment (After Approval)

Candidates are not required to establish the business until the Business Application is approved; then establish and operate as proposed.

06

Operate + Document Reality

Maintain strong records (leases, payroll, taxes, contracts) and demonstrate active management and real economic benefit.

07

Nomination → PR Application

If AAIP is satisfied with the application and business plan/operation, proceed with nomination steps and PR submission under the PNP pathway.
